RAFAEL WOLFE

Character Profile

His Past…

Rafael is William’s unacknowledged illegitimate son. His mother, Maria, was the Wolfe family’s housekeeper.

Rafael grew up in the village under a cloud of speculation and scandal. Whilst the Wolfe family had always been revered and respected, circumstances surrounding Rafael’s birth split the villagers – some walked past Maria and her child, looking the other way, some quietly invited her in for a cup of tea.

Rafael became friends with Nathaniel Wolfe fairly early on, when they hung out together in the village, and then went on to be welcomed into the brothers’ gang by Jacob, who felt Rafael had every right to be part of his heritage. Always leaping over the back fence in the grounds so William wouldn’t see him, Rafael joined the boys on camping trips, fishing expeditions and general messing about. No one ever discussed the emotional nitty-gritty of the situation, preferring easy boyish banter instead.

When William died Rafael was nine years old, and Jacob left a year later, leaving his share of the inheritance with Maria for Rafael. A brilliant entrepreneur, computer- whiz and inventor, Rafael took his inheritance and worked tirelessly. He was rewarded by increasing wealth. His business took him all over the globe, but Rafael decided that he needed to have a base, and as England hasd only ever ravaged his family, he decided to relocate to Brazil – keeping loosely in touch with Nathaniel predominantly, and with the rest of the family as well.

His Present…

Rafael is based in Rio, and is head of his own technology company. He understands the balance between technology and aesthetics, and creates beautiful objects that the world is crying out for. He speaks Portuguese fluently. He has a thirst for knowledge and for power – his family will never want for anything ever again. On the covers of many magazines, he is happy being the face of his company, but hates having his past with the Wolfes dragged up. He gets very angry if the press pushes him on the subject of his father, but remains utterly loyal to his brothers. He married the beautiful Leila, and that was the icing on the cake of success!

But now his marriage is crumbling, and the vows he took seem in vain. Rafael chased a rainbow – but made his wife feel as though she was never more than a trophy… It will take all his courage to win his wife back…

His Future…

Good publicity is paramount for both of them – even down to sharing a suite in a very glamorous hotel to keep the paparazzi happy. And this is how Rafael and Leila find themselves trapped together for a week at the Cannes Film Festival. Their separate routines slowly begin intertwining…there’s straightening his tie here, unzipping her dress there…but with so much tempestuous water under the bridge can they really make their charade real?

AUTHOR AND CHARACTER QUESTIONS WITH JANETTE KENNY

Behind the scenes at Wolfe Manor…

Share a secret about your hero or heroine?
Rafael was secretly afraid he would end up unloved, unwanted, without ever having a family of his own, without a real home and genuine love.

Who is the biggest, baddest Wolfe?
Lucas Wolfe. He was the loose cannon – the man who had nothing at all to lose, for William Wolfe had cruelly robbed him of the identity of his maternity because of his own deep shame.

Which Wolfe brother did you most fancy?
Oh, that’s a difficult choice to make. I love reckless playboys and fearless race car drivers, so I was drawn to both Lucas and Alex. Of course there is Jacob, who at such a tender age proved he was a hero. And it’s a given that I have a soft spot for the bastard son, and I did so enjoy writing about Rafael! Can I say I thought they were all fascinating?

Which is your hero’s favourite room in Wolfe Manor?
The private parlor in Wolfe Manor. It looks out on the vast gardens and dilapidated fence, and that was where Rafael first sneaked onto Wolfe Manor property. To be inside the manor looking out is a major triumph for him, though it will never make up for all those lost years of his father denying, and disowning, him.

How did your hero pop the big question to the heroine?
Totally spontaneously after a night with Leila in Rio. He felt a connection to her that he’d never felt with another soul and knew he couldn’t let her go.

Your writing secrets…

What do you enjoy most about writing as part of a continuity series; how does it differ to writing a single title?
I loved the vast scope of a continuity, for it provided countless possibilities for each character to explore. It was also wonderful to share this sisterhood of writing with such a talented group of authors.

What do you think makes a great hero/heroine?
Their inner struggle. The thing that they refuse to acknowledge, but that they must vanquish in order to ever find true happiness.

When you are writing, what is a typical day?
Ah, my writing days are far from typical! I have a full time job, so I write before I go to work, say from 5:30 to 7am, then after dinner and a tiny window of relaxation, I write again from 8pm to midnight. Weekends I juggle a personal life with writing. Often the writing wins out because of deadlines.
