JACK WOLFE

Character Profile

His Past…

The third eldest child of the Wolfes, the restless Jack Wolfe came up against his father’s wrath on many occasions. However, unlike some of his brothers, he never really took it personally. Extraordinarily perceptive, with an instinctive intuition, Jack could tell long before any of his brothers when William was going to snap – which meant he was able to dodge William’s temper as much as possible.

Jacob and Lucas’s departures after William’s death left Jack in charge of his four younger siblings. Jacob had been the brother Jack was closest to, and he’d aspired to be like him when he grew up. His eldest brother’s self-exile tore a hole inside Jack – it was a betrayal he just couldn’t understand.

On the surface Jack stepped up to the plate, looking after his siblings admirably. His agile brain made easy work of the family finances, and he was determined to do what he could for his brothers and sister. Emotionally, however, he was still only an eighteen-year-old boy, and becoming a father figure to his traumatized family was a huge amount for him to bear. He could make the family books balance but he couldn’t soothe their pain – or his own. His feelings toward Jacob – and to some extent Lucas – never really thawed; and the deep-set pain left Jack with an ingrained inability to trust, which added a darker, more brooding edge to his character.

His Present…

Jack has made his money – recklessly playing the stock exchange and winning. The scent of money is powerful, and it wasn’t long before he worked his way up and became the youngest trader on the floor. He excelled in the high-pressure, high-risk atmosphere, and made a great deal of money very quickly.

Very strong, cool and indomitably restless, he isn’t your typical workaholic billionaire. He can do anything and everything he puts his brilliant mind to – if only he could be bothered – but nothing holds his attention for long. To stave off his restless energy he works endlessly, juggling many projects in the air at the same time and following long days at the office with long nights of either more work or frenetic socializing – anything to keep himself from being alone with his own thoughts. His brain never switches off; consequently his body is never truly tranquil.

Notorious gambler Jack no longer gets a buzz from the risk, or the money he takes at the card table. In fact it bores him. Until one night he wins more than he ever bargained for…

His Future…

His prize is the stunning Cara Taylor, who for some reason he feels responsible for. However, Cara feel a little differently – she might be down on her luck, but she certainly doesn’t need rescuing by a maverick card-sharp like Jack! Now she’s stuck with him she doesn’t know whether to love him or loathe him. But she’s cut from the same pack – and playing Jack at his own game is the most fun she’s ever had!

AUTHOR AND CHARACTER QUESTIONS WITH LYNN RAYE HARRIS

Behind the scenes at Wolfe Manor…

Share a secret about your hero or heroine?
Jack loves Cara’s long legs, but when she was growing up she hated being so tall. She was always taller than the boys in her class and it made her feel gawky and ugly. Thankfully, she no longer feels that way!

Who is the biggest, baddest Wolfe?
Jack would say he’s the biggest, baddest Wolfe because he never, ever shrank from doing the hard things in life. Jack is tough and willing to go the extra mile.

Which Wolfe brother did you most fancy?
Jack, of course! He was such a brooding, lonely, sexy man. He has a Bond-like quality to him. He’s a loner and he’s tough as nails. Nothing fazes him. You can absolutely count on him in any crisis.

Which is your hero’s favourite room in Wolfe Manor?
Jack isn’t very fond of Wolfe Manor, but if he had to pick a room, it would be the kitchen. Because when he was little and feeling lonely or scared, he would creep into the kitchen and hide beneath the big prep table. The cook always knew he was there, however, and she’d lure him out with tasty morsels of food. He felt safe and loved in the warm kitchen with its delicious smells.

How did your hero pop the big question to the heroine?
You’ll need to read the book to find out!

Your writing secrets…

What do you enjoy most about writing as part of a continuity series; how does it differ to writing a single title?
I enjoyed working with the other authors! We had an email loop and we talked quite a lot about the details of the stories. When I’m writing a single title, I’m working alone. It was nice to have the support of the other authors.

What do you think makes a great hero/heroine?
I think a great hero and/or heroine needs to be passionate about something. Passion is at the heart of every strong character, whether it’s a passion for a cause, a worthy goal, or even another person.

When you are writing, what is a typical day?
It depends on how close to deadline I am! In the early days, a typical writing day entails getting up early with my husband and going up to my office with a cup of coffee or tea. I work on email and social media for a little while, and then I write. By the time my husband comes home again, I’m done for the day. But as I get close to a deadline, I end up working late into the evening until the book is done.
