Guilty Crushes

by Grace Thiele, Presents Editorial Assistant

I’ve got a confession to make. For many years (ten, give or take) I have held onto a guilty crush. Ever since I saw his dominating presence on my TV screen, his merciless take down of whoever failed to meet his exacting standards, his glistening white teeth, and his mastery of V-neck jumpers and jeans, I have longed for…Simon Cowell.

I hear you gasp in shock and horror! But the High-Trousered one will always hold a special place in my heart. I still claim that he is the ultimate alpha male: commanding, arrogant, rolling in money and with a string of women in tow (until, of course, he got one of them pregnant – maybe a not-quite-marriage of convenience?), nothing outside of a Presents novel can touch him.

However, I’m perfectly happy to look askance at the guilty crushes of others. Presents editor Carly Byrne has a thing for Arnold Schwarzenegger, stating categorically that ‘I love a beefcake and he’s the ultimate–but I’m proud to say it and feel no guilt!’ (I’ve never met Carly’s husband, but I now imagine him to have arms like Popeye.)

Historical editor Kathryn ‘used to’ (yes of course we believe you) have thing for the book version of Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter, which even she admits was ‘pretty weird’.

Current intern Izzy has a crush on animated character Li Shang from the Disney movie Mulan–but I don’t find that weird at all. I personally have always wanted my own Disney Beast (nothing funny – just for cuddles. And his library.)

And one associate editor, who wishes to remain anonymous, has a secret burning desire for author Robert McKee. I would like to add that the editor in question is a good forty years younger than Mr. McKee, and frankly, lightyears out of his league. But it’s nice to know that if I ever need to blackmail her, I have ammunition at the ready 🙂

So – do you have any guilty crushes? If so, why – and what makes them guilty?! Let us know in the comments!
