Editing Lynne Graham’s 100th Book
by Pippa Roscoe, Associate Editor
There are certain times in an editor’s career that stand out. Buying your first author, working with an author you’ve read and loved even before you started in your role, meeting your authors in person. All of these are a mixture of joy, (usually accompanied by an internal mini fist pump with a declaration of YAY or a SQUEE), thoughts of how did I get so lucky, and of course the utmost professionalism!
This year it was an honor for me to edit Lynne Graham’s 100th book. Not only is it a massive achievement for one of our most treasured and much loved authors, but it’s also a damn good book!
The editor/author relationship is very special. As an author you are entrusting your story, characters and your happy ever after to another person. As an editor, our goal is to ensure that the story realizes its fullest potential. With your author you talk about the psychology of characters, the truth of the story and in doing so you can touch on quite a few deeply personal subjects. Throughout any exchange there must be an honesty in the relationship and a trust that allow these to become safe conversations. My favorite chats with Lynne have been about our mutual over dependence on coffee, the simple pleasure of dog walking, and the incredible attraction of alpha males! We do, of course, also talk about work, but what’s discussed about a story between an editor and author, stays firmly between them! Lynne is an absolute dream to work with, and a wonderful person who is kind, generous, giving and deeply passionate about her stories.
With that in mind, please do join me this June in celebrating Lynne Graham’s 100th book and the simply amazing achievement of selling over 35 million copies worldwide.
