Today is the big day for you aspiring Harlequin Presents authors out there — it is the deadline to submit your entries for the The Harlequin Presents Writing Competition 2009!

You have until midnight tonight to email your entries — in other words, anything that’s not in the competition inbox by tomorrow morning GMT will be too late. So if you haven’t sent in your entries yet, better get typing, polishing, proofreading, etc. then take a deep breath and hit “send”!

Here’s a reminder of what’s at stake:

• The competition entry must consist of either the first chapter and synopsis of a Harlequin Presents or Modern Heat novel
• Please email your entry to writingcompetition@hmb.co.uk
• The WINNER receives an editor for a year
• TWO RUNNERS-UP will be given critiques of their first chapter entries and an editorial consultation
• The competition will close on November 2nd 2009 and the winner will be announced in December 2009 on I Heart Presents

Best of luck to everyone!!!

    Hi Anna
You’re probably in bed now as you are ahead of me timewise. I can empathise with your post, though. I hit the send button at 19.56. shaking and wondering what on earth I’m playing at now. LOL.
It’s a nice big glass of red wine for me to calm my nerves.(;>)
Every best wish to everyone entering the competition.

  5. 5 Sharon Martin

Anyone else dying to know how many entries were received. Bet it’s thousands. I can’t wait to read the winners entries and want to wish everyone the best of luck.

  6. 6 Suzanne

I am Sharon. But one has to be in it for a chance. It’s a tad bit nerve-wracking isn’t it? But the Na No has kept me busy up until now. I should get back to it.

Once again all the best to the competitors and the editors who are reading and judging this competition.

    Thanks,

    Suzanne :)

Just popping in to wish everyone who entered the best of luck!

I’m thinking back to when I hit send on mine, and I’m pretty sure I just slumped back in the chair and stared at the screen for an eternity. It’s definitely intense, lol…but so worth it!

Mena a glass of wine sounds like a great way to unwind.

Anna that suddenly coming together feeling is the best-yay!

And I can’t wait to read the winners too.
Great job on getting your entry in everyone!!

    :-)

It’s simply wonderful knowing so much creative talent has landed at the feet of the editors into one big pile.

My best to all of you and a heartfelt thanks to the editors for the grueling task ahead…and the tender loving care with which they handle our hard work and hopes.

There are no losers here. Only invaluable experience, hope and opportunity.

I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to submit, but I did. It was hard pushing that send button – my stomach was tied up in knots. But nothing will happen for me if I don’t try. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain.

    Good luck, everyone!

    Laurie

  10. 10 MarilynS

I can’t wait for one of you to win and hopefully you’ll send me your first book to review! Best of luck to all of you, I’m sure it was an incredible experience.

  11. 11 Madeline

I have a really silly question, not in relation to the competition. I’ve always wondered, where is the emphasis on Harlequin ‘Presents’? Is is Presents as in gifts, or Presents as in to present someone with a gift? Both are fitting, so I’ve never been sure!

Can anyone answer this for me?
    Thanks!
    Madeline

  12. 12 Trenda

    Madeline,

(someone correct me if I’m wrong)
I think the “Presents” is meant to be read as Harlequin presenting a certain author. I believe the Presents line originally showcased three of Harlequin Romance’s most popular authors, Violet Winspear, Anne Hampson, and Anne Mather.

    Thanks Trenda!

I’ve always pronounced is as such, but when I heard a fellow critique partner of mine call it presents as in a birthday present, I pulled up short. Thanks for the explanation, that’s really good to know how it all came about!

  14. 14 Lorraine

Karen in California summed up the Presents competition with these words:

‘There are no losers here. Only invaluable experience, hope and opportunity.’

Thank you all for providing friendship, encouragement and company on the hope-filled road to publication.

    Good luck to all.

  15. 15 Lorraine

Just a footnote here…when do we get to know how many entries were received? Thank goodness I’ve been busy with NaNo. LOL

  16. 16 Amy

    Hi Lorraine,

I’ve sent a note to the editors for an update, I’ll let you know once I hear :)
