The Mills & Boon centenary continues to heat up, and here’s a chance for fans in England to be a part of a documentary about it. Below is an email we received from the producer for anyone interested.

Hi there, my name’s Julie. I’m a fan of romantic fiction and I’m making a documentary for Channel 4 that will celebrate the Mills & Boon publishing phenomenon in the year of its centenary. I want to make a warm, intelligent documentary that will take us into the private worlds of Mills & Boon’s readers. I hope to uncover the secrets of Mills & Boon’s enduring success and find answers to the perennial question “What do women really want?”

It’s important to me that the film should convey the way in which Mills & Boon’s have evolved over time as society has changed. I want to show that, contrary to popular myths and assumptions, Mills & Boons are read by women of all ages and that there are different kinds of M & B’s catering to different kinds of women!

I’m very eager to hear from fans of Mills & Boon novels – young and old – to hear what it is about the books that you love so much and how this passion for Mills & Boon relates to the rest of your life. Due to budgetary restrictions I am unfortunately only able to feature UK based readers. All discussion at this point would be off-camera and you’d be under no obligation to appear in the final documentary.

I look forward to hearing from you and telling you more about my project.

All the best,

    Hi Everyone

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it really strange that nobody has commented on this blog?
When I first read it, I do admit that I felt a bit reticent about it.
I have mentioned this on previous blogs, about admitting to people that I read Mills and Boon. I would only ever chat to other known readers about it.
Does that smack of cowardice or not being confident enough to tackle the inevitable come-back from a non reader? We all know what we would be told: ‘You don’t live in the real world, get real!! Or: ‘Read a real book, why don’t you!!
Can I just say, I, and everyone here, no doubt, read other books as well, not just M&B.
Whether I would have the guts to talk to an editor, about my obsession, which has lasted nearly 30 years, I honestly don’t know.
I feel really strange about it, and to be honest it’s made me ask questions about myself.
If you could speak to any of my friends, they would tell you that their impression of me, is that I am a modern, confident woman. In fact, I was told last week: ‘But Kar, you’re a grown-up!!
How does everyone else feel? I hope I’m not on my own. Because if I am, oh my, I will need a major re-think.

Or, I’ve just thought of something – perhaps you’ve all just e-mailed her direct, without posting a comment.

    Best wishes

    xx Karen

    Hi Karen
I haven’t ignored this post out of any embarrassment about being out in the open as a reader, and an aspiring writer, but as I emailed Julie over a month agao about this and haven’t had a reply I assumed I’m obviously not “the right sort of reader”.

I imagine you are right and a number of people would have emailed her directly.

I have to admit when I told my work collegues I was writing a novel and they wanted to know what I was working on, I hesitated for a moment before I said a romance. Sadly soem people do have stereotypes of what a romance reader is like- the stats of course completely contrdict the stereotype!

Tell us what you think!
