Mills & Boon at Oxford Literary Festival

by Mary Oxford

To commemorate its centenary, Mills and Boon are sponsoring an event at the Oxford Literary Festival. UK-based writers Joanne Harris (Chocolat, Blackberry Wine), Katie Fforde (Wild Designs, Paradise Fields), Nicola Cornick (HMB historical writer) and Matt Dunn (The Ex-Boyfriend’s Handbook, From Here to Paternity), will be discussing How Heroes and Heroines have altered over the past 100 Years. Their chair is Daisy Goodwin, who presented and produced last year’s BBC 4 documentary Reader I Married Him that covered this very topic (although she went back further than 100 years).

The event takes place on Thursday, 3rd April at 6.30pm in the Marquee at Christ Church college and costs £7.50 (including a glass of wine afterwards). So if you already live in the UK or plan to come here during the month of April, come to Oxford and spend a great hour or two with fellow romantic devotees. Bookings are via the link below (on-line I believe they’re free, but you have to pay a fee if you book over the phone).

Look forward to seeing some of you there.

    Hi Everyone

I’m supposed to be writing an article about a man who does great eportfolios for artists, but the zero comments were really getting to me so I decided to break the duck of my own post. How sad is that?

Putting this event together has been great fun and I was particularly pleased to be able to interview Nicola Cornick for the Oxford Times. I write articles about authors for a living and have interviewed all shapes and sizes, fiction and non-fiction, but this one was just a gift. We had a ball talking romance. Best of all I got to see Nicola’s shelves of keeper romances. I even got to borrow one!

Anyway, to cut a long post short, if some of you can come to the event, I will be so pleased, but I know as so many live far away, the chances are rather small.

By the way, congratulations Lynne for winning the first chapter challenge. I look forward to reading the complete novel one day. The title alone is very compelling!

Better get back to the article now. Deadline’s 8am tomorrow.

    Warm wishes

    Mary

I wish I didnt live so far away or I would come to all these events. I would be such a pest! I love reading about how authors got started & their experiences writing. how exciting! I always dreamt of writing when I was young but unfortunately got too tied up working 2 jobs forever & then taking care of a sick father and then a sick husband. I try not to feel too bad as I can still read to escape! I have a amazing luck winning sweeps that dont require talent (just online things & mail in things) I won some out of the country trips to cheer up my husband. well the reason I post this is because I am trying to win a trip to the uk and I do have amazing luck so I never know. Meanwhile I hope you have a very successful and fun event! Great work Mary! good luck on the article!! redlighting

I enjoyed reading your comment Mary, and I’m sure you made your deadline in the end.

And good luck redlighting- I hope you do win the trip!

I would love to go, it sounds like a totally fab event, but unfortunately even being in the UK doesn’t make it an option- that’s a regular work day for me, and Oxford is 4 hours away (where’s the billionaire husband with a helicopter on call when you need him?).

  4. MaryOxford says:

Yes I made the deadline thanks. I’m onto the next one now. I know some HMB authors are going to the event, so will try and get photos, although if they’re not modern/presents, are they allowed on this thread?

PS Redlighting, I hope to see you there.

  6. Hello, my name is Gemma Ball, and I am a 22 year old student in my final year of studying a Fashion Futures degree in London.

I am contacting Mills & Boon fans and authors in order to hopefully receive some valuable help and information with my final degree module.

For my final module I have been briefed to choose a brand and then, predict how and where the brand will have developed in ten to fifteen years time, and I have chosen the Mills & Boon brand.

I really want to hear from people who are passionate about Mills & Boon, people of all ages and gender who are willing to answer a few questions for me and help me to understand who the modern romance lover is!

Any help towards my degree is amazing!

so please contact me on gem.t.ball@hotmail.com

    thank you!
